Nevada SSBCI venture capital, Battle Born Venture co-invests behind a lead

Battle Born Venture never leads a round. It matches professional investors into Nevada startups, with published caps on both the round and its own participation.

Nevada places its SSBCI venture capital through Battle Born Venture, which is explicit about the one thing it will not do. It does not lead rounds. It co-invests with professional investors, meaning venture capital firms, corporate venture arms, and incorporated angel funds, into high-growth Nevada startups. A company without a lead is not early for this program; it is outside the model the program is built on.

The lead investor comes first

Battle Born describes itself as a co-investor rather than a lead, matching alongside institutional venture capital funds, family offices, or strategic corporate investors. Companies are expected to have secured a lead investor for a Series Seed, Series A, or Series B round.

Pre-seed companies can qualify through a narrower door: those emerging from the University of Nevada, Reno, UNLV, or the Desert Research Institute, or holding active SBIR or STTR grants. The program has also entered co-investment partnerships with local institutional investors including StartUpNV and Desert Forge Ventures, whose investments it will match up to one for one.

The caps are published on both sides of the deal

Battle Born participates in deals from $200,000 to $20 million in total size and invests up to half of a total round. Against any one company it invests up to $1 million over time, and no more than $500,000 in the first round.

Those are two different limits doing two different jobs. The round band decides whether a deal is in scope at all, and the per-company caps decide how much of it Battle Born can take. A company should check its round against both before assuming a number.

Structure and eligibility are specific, and the exclusions are real

The program uses equity and equity-like deal structures, such as convertible and SAFE notes. Its investments are in startups with a Nevada business license and a Nevada business address.

The company has to be a C corporation or an S corporation. The program states plainly that it does not invest in LLCs, which is a structural bar rather than a preference. Gambling, alcohol, cannabis, firearms, real estate, investment firms, and lenders are excluded sectors. It also expresses a preference for highly innovative technology-based startups over standard software as a service companies.

What the sources say about status, and what they do not

As of the research date, Battle Born's own site says it expects to be busy over the next few months as the program resumes investing. That describes activity restarting rather than a dated application window.

Nevada's state small business page separately describes the program as accepting applications through the Battle Born site. The two are reported here as each source states them, and neither is treated as a guarantee that a particular window is open. Confirm the current position with the program before building a raise around it.

Battle Born Venture will not lead. It participates in rounds from $200,000 to $20 million, takes up to half a round, and caps itself at $1 million per company over time and $500,000 in a first round.
