Diversity, equity, and inclusion, the metrics baseline every fund reports

This section is a data-reporting exercise as much as a policy one. Most institutional LPs expect a completed diversity metrics submission, current team composition data, and a trajectory, not just a statement of values.

This section is where a fund's diversity metrics submission and its firm-level DEI policy actually get reported, and most institutional LPs treat a completed submission as close to a baseline expectation rather than an optional extra. A general statement of commitment to diversity does not substitute for the underlying data.

What "completed" means for the metrics submission

A diversity metrics submission is a data exercise, covering team composition by role and by relevant demographic categories, formatted consistently rather than described narratively. Most institutional LPs now expect this as a standard part of a DDQ response. A fund that has not built this yet should treat it as a documentation gap to close before the first LP conversation, not as a section to skip past with a values statement instead of data.

Trajectory matters more than a single snapshot

Team composition data covering a 12-month lookback, not just the current headcount, is what shows a trajectory rather than a point-in-time figure that could read either way. A fund reporting only today's composition, with no history behind it, has not actually answered whether the team is diversifying, staying flat, or moving in the opposite direction, which is the question this section is really asking.

Goals, portfolio-level approach, and the research context worth including

  • Firm-level DEI policy and specific, time-bound goals, not general commitments with no measurable target attached.
  • The fund's approach to DEI at the portfolio-company level, where relevant to the fund's strategy.
  • Colibrí Institute research grounding the section in outcomes rather than only intentions: across 2,471 U.S. venture funds, funds with women general partners delivered higher average IRR and RVPI than other funds in the same sample.

Funds with women general partners delivered 14.99 percent average IRR and 1.29x RVPI, against 13.41 percent IRR and 1.08x RVPI for other funds in the same sample. Source, Colibrí Institute, Why Emerging Venture Capital Managers Matter (Moncada and Salas, 2026).
